Appointments (updated 28/8/22)

Throughout covid the surgery operated an on-the-day service. This meant asking patients to call first thing in the morning in order to get a telephone consultation with a GP that same day, and the GP would arrange a face-to-face examination if that was required.

During lockdown, and whilst people were working from home, this worked well for many people. However, we know that it caused bottlenecks at certain times of the day.

We realise that many aspects of our lives are returning to ‘normal’, and know that our appointment system needs to change to reflect this.

The NHS still has some restrictions in place to protect the vulnerable patients who use our services. This means that some of the covid restrictions including social distancing and wearing face coverings remain important in the surgery and we need to reflect this in the way our appointments operate.

Our appointment system consists of a mix of urgent (same day) appointments and pre-bookable appointments. These may be either telephone consultations, or face-to-face appointments. *Please note only one issue can be dealt with per appointment*.

We have a range of healthcare professionals working in the practice. When calling for an appointment, please give our receptionists a brief description of your problem so that they can direct you to the most appropriate appointment. Our clinicians include:

  • General Practitioners (doctors)
  • Advanced Nurse Practitioners
  • Practice Nurses
  • Pharmacist
  • Mental Health Nurse
  • Community Link Worker
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Healthcare Assistant

Our reception team will ensure you are seen by the most appropriate healthcare professional.

Telephone Consultations

A telephone consultation is appropriate when you do not need to be physically examined. A mental health review, medication review, or follow-up appointment would be examples of appropriate telephone consultations. A telephone consultation is given the same time and care as a face-to-face appointment.

Face-to-face Appointments

Face-to-face appointments are appropriate when a GP physically needs to examine you. Abdominal pain, women’s health issues, breast or testicular pain, and skin conditions would be examples of appropriate face-to-face consultations.

Routine Appointments

Routine appointments are appropriate when you have a long-standing health condition, need a review of an existing condition, or would prefer to wait to get a more convenient appointment time.

Urgent Appointments

Urgent appointments may be appropriate where a new illness has emerged that cannot wait for a routine appointment. Urgent appointments are not for medical reports.

Out of Hours

At evening and weekends, and during public holidays, medical cover is provided by NHS 24. If you require medical attention outwith normal opening times, please contact NHS24 by telephoning 111.

Genuine medical emergencies may be more appropriately treated by attending accident and Emergency or by calling 999.

Home Visits

Whilst we encourage our patients to come to the surgery, where we have the proper equipment and facilities available, we do appreciate this is not always possible. If you do need a home visit, you can help us by calling reception before 10:00.

You may only request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the practice. Your GP will only visit you at home if they think that your medical condition requires it and will also decide how urgently a visit is needed. Please bear this in mind and be prepared to provide suitable details to enable the doctor to schedule house calls

Teaching Practice

The practice occasionally undertakes the training of medical and nursing students. You may be asked if you have any objections to the students sitting in on your consultations with the doctor or nurse.

The students find this very useful and we appreciate your co-operation.

If you do not wish the student to be present, please let us know.

Cancel an Appointment

It is important that you inform the reception staff if you are unable to attend your appointment, this will allow that appointment to be offered to another patient. If you fail to notify the Practice that you are unable to attend, you will be sent a letter informing you that you have defaulted from your appointment. Persistent defaulters maybe removed from the list.

Text Reminder Service

We have a texting service which allows you to receive confirmation and reminders about your appointments.

To have this service you will need to register by completing a consent form, which is available from reception.

Please remember to update your contact details with us when you change address, telephone numbers and email address.

Eye Problems

Whatever your eye problem, your first port of call should be an optician/optometrist. An optician is the best person to assess urgent eye problems, check for eye disorders and treat eye conditions. They have the professional training and necessary equipment to assess most eye problems. They can provide prescriptions for can refer to specialist hospital services if needed.
